What We're Lacking

There’s a new Papa John’s Pizza on Broadway here in Inwood. So, I’ll admit, I like Papa John’s. It’s my favorite of the big pizza chains. They have that garlic butter to dip your crusts in…yum. But I don’t think this is what Inwood most needed at this point in time, especially since we already have a really great pizza place—Grandpa’s! If I were more of a pizza connoisseur, I’m sure I could devote a whole blog to the pleasures of Grandpa’s, but suffice it to say that it deserves to be ranked among the best establishments in the city. I certainly won’t be patronizing the new Papa John’s very often (if at all) in an effort to remain loyal to our local patriarchal pizza place. It would be a crime if the new “Papa” in the ‘hood caused our tried and true Mom & Pop business to suffer.

But all of this leads me to the real question at hand, which is, if Inwood doesn’t need a new pizza joint, what does it need? Well, here (in no particular order) are a few ideas:

1. A yoga studio. Inwood Peace Yoga opened at the Good Shepherd Convent on Isham about a month before I moved up here in 2004 and it immediately became an integral part of my Inwood life. When the church kicked them out and then shortly thereafter Michael (the proprietor) and his wife Sofia moved away, it was a real blow to me, one from which I have yet to recover. I now have to take the subway 100+ blocks to take a yoga class! There’s a new pilates studio getting ready to open on 215th and Broadway, so maybe I’ll give that a try, but we yogis really miss having a place to practice nearby.

2. A gym. I am not a gym person, but I am sure many of my neighbors would be thrilled to have somewhere to work out in Inwood.

3. A Starbucks. Alright, I deserve some grief for this one, but really I am just aching for a pleasant place to linger over a good cup of coffee. Hopefully, the forthcoming Indian Road Café (see previous posting) will ultimately fulfill this need, but I also wish for Starbucks as a sort of symbol that Inwood has “arrived.” It’s not that I necessarily need my neighborhood validated in that way, but I have property values to consider!

4. More restaurants. We definitely have some gems here and it was wonderful to see the Park Terrace Bistro recently receive a favorable review in the New York Times, but we can never have too many decent places to eat. My hubby is especially hankering for some good Thai food.

5. A bookstore. Ok, now I am entering the realm of “don’t hold your breath” but here’s the thing: I love Inwood so much, that I really cherish my “All Inwood” days when I have no need to travel below Dyckman Street. So, in formulating this list of businesses we could really use, I’ve been thinking of the kinds of things I have to get on the subway to acquire. While I have promised myself to start utilizing the Inwood library more often, I love to buy books and sadly, I cannot do that without a train ride. Of course, in my imagination the Inwood bookstore is independent and quirky, but I’d even settle for a Border’s.

6. A movie theatre. This one is REALLY wishful thinking, but if we had a movie theatre in Inwood, then perhaps I truly would never leave. That dumpy theatre in Washington Heights is always a disappointment. Perhaps there’s room in the Target complex over there in the Bronx for a couple of screens or else somewhere on this side of the bridge East of Broadway?

I have other favorite stores on my fantasy list (The Body Shop, anyone?) but I’m not that deluded. I know we are a ways away from becoming the Upper West Side and thankfully so. But I think if a few of the businesses listed above opened Inwood outposts, the quality of living here could be even better than it already is. Does anyone have any others to add?

As a resident of this area since I was 4 years old, I am now 41. Let me tell you. Everything you want was at one time, the staple of this neighborhood (except the gym) The McDonalds on Dyckman Street? Once known as the Alpine Movie Theatre. The year we moved here, I saw Dumbo as a matinee, my mom comes out, and sees the Godfather being listed as opening that evening. We went to the deli right next door (cannot remember the name, but they had the best corned beef sandwiches) she gets dinner, and we go back into the movie theatre, cause honey, she loved her some Marlon Brando.

Was I traumatized seeing people getting their brains shot out? Nope! I fell asleep midway through it all. By the time 6pm rolled around, she told my grandmother and granddad about it, and everyone in the house (except she and I) go to the movies to check movie out.

EVERYTHING was on Dyckman, Women's clothing stores, lingerie stores, Jewish delis, and Italian Deli, (hell, there was even a funeral home, right in the middle of the avenue (where large parking lot is, across from CVS). CVS was Woolworth's We had a large drugstore (can't remember name at the moment), KidsWorld (now defuct) was Associated Supermarket, Selecto Supermarket was A&P, Fine Fare was Grand Union, Oh, the changes I have seen.

I didn't even have to go downtown to shop. I did not get to Macy's until I was 15 years old.

But one by one, stores were "mysteriously" burning down. Then, old shopkeepers either sold or gave up their businesses. The last straw was when I was going to work one day (19 yr old) and the Carvel ice cream store was in flames. It was located right where Washington Mutual Bank/International House sits today. It was heartbreaking.

It was a great place to grow up...Although I welcome change, it really doesn't matter much. Dyckman will NEVER be the same.

Moni. thank you SO much for this history. Great to know (and very interesting info about the fires.) Hopefully, there can be some resurgence even if Dyckman isn't quite restored to how you remember it. My son will grow up here (at least in his early years) and I hope he gets to have the great memories of the neighborhood that you do.

If you want a neighborhood full of bland chain stores, why don't you move to the suburbs?

Your comment confuses me a bit, "Anonymous". Sure I mention Borders and The Body Shop but in this same post I also worry about Papa John's putting Grandpas pizza out of business and I said I would prefer an indie book store. The businesses Moni describes in her comment swhich used to be here ound great to me.

I don't mind your ccriticism but I do wish you'd identify yourself and not take digs at me anonymously in the future.

I read all the local papers. Apparently there is going to be a new mall built on Broadway...in Kingsbridge, across the bridge.

For those who moan about Inwood lacking certain amenities Kingsbridge has a great gourmet store, a stop and shop and other places we lack.

Btw there is a load of space in the former Verizon building on Broadway. Perhaps someone should write down the broker's name and number and contact B & N, which is HQd at 18th Street and Fifth Avenue, attn: Leonard Ruggerio(owner) and ask them to consider the location.

You could also contact the real estate rep for which ever chain you feel belongs.

Moni,

I saw many a movie at the Alpine (apparently, the Lorraine on 207th closed before I came to the area in 72). The old world deli next door was named "Appetizing" or at least that was what was on the sign over the front of the shop. Great smoked fish and the like.

And, to the rest of the readership,

Though I find the anonymous poster rather simplistic, I pretty much share the feeling that this is a neighborhood that has a character that is not Park Slope, Williamsburg, a suburb, the Upper West side. When people discover Inwood and are drawn by the parks and (relatively and not for long) low rent, they seem to be impelled to make the neighborhood over so that it more closely resembles the one they can no longer afford to live in. Frankly, I love good restaurants, book stores and all the sort of things have been long in coming to Inwood, but the last few years have had a "beginning of the end" feeling. Change happens, I know, and that is an inevitable and good thing, but now that we have seen one mom and pop close after the other and Dominos, Papa John's, Dunkin Donuts, McD's and so on come in as replacements I think that it is time acknowledge we get what we deserve (ie, stores and businesses we patronize with our cash) in the long run. It won't be any of the chains that I mentioned that are replaced with cool restaurants, coffee shops and bookstores. You will see the demise of JC World, Dichter Pharmacy, Dick's Hardware (some of my favorite survivors) before a single franchised chain store closes.

I could go on, but I'll spare you.

OTOH, I do hope to eat a decent falafel made in Inwood before I die (and I'm going on 58) ;>

Peter, I am not sure how you found my dusty blog since I have not kept it up! But thank you for your lovely comment. Despite my original post, I agree with you 100%. Besides being consumed with being a mom, the other reason I have taken a leave from blogging is because I realized I was speaking out of turn with regard to Inwood. As a relative newbie, I'm sure I must have sounded pretty insolent in just "discovering" this neighborhood which so many of you have called home for so long. Anyway, if anyone sees this post I hope you will join me in celebrating the opening of the Indian Road Cafe! NOT a chain and a wonderful addition to the neighborhood. An event that may even bring me out of blogging retirement!
